Welcome to the eighth installment of our monthly server price reporting for 2022.

Since 2019, we have been tracking changing parts prices for RAM, SSDs, Hard Drives, and various CPUs. This data is collected monthly, and then shared on this blog.

Currently, all listed prices are from eBay, for used hardware. We focus on used hardware because these prices change more frequently and this gives a better feel for changes in value.

Prices as of August 1st, 2022

↑ or indicates if the price has gone up or down since last month
Price — The lowest price to buy this part from a reputable seller in a moderate quantity, price as shipped to the US
Availability — 6 or Fewer ebay listings = low
7-19 ebay listings = moderate
20+ ebay listings = high

Back in May of this year we began showcasing graphs with a 12-month timeframe for different types of items. Going forward, we think this will be a better visual representation of price fluctuations and will hopefully help identify pricing trends on the aftermarket.

This month we would like to highlight the 12-month graph for DDR3 Ram Types:

price trend chart
  • For most types of RAM that we stock, we ensure that they are a Registered type. E3 Xeon CPUs do require unregistered ram, designated by the ram product code ending in “E” instead of “R”. Furthermore we also check to make sure every DIMM is ECC capable.

  • Over the past year, the average price for the lower memory RAM types have fluctuated very little. At this point in time, the 16GB and 32GB types are at a lower average price point than they were in 2021

  • This finding can also be observed with the 64GB RAM. Although individual DIMM prices are still over $50, the price has dropped by a nominal amount, and the availability remains high on the aftermarket
  • We expect this trend will continue, as the stock for the majority of these RAM types are always widely available and shows no signs of becoming scarce.

  • This does not apply to one of the newer types of RAM we are tracking, 2Rx8 PC3-10600E ECC REG. Previously, this RAM was widely available, however this month showed a drastic reduction on stock. As a result only the pricier listings are available at the moment. This is likely due to this being a less common type of ram, being only useful for single processor servers instead of dual processor servers.

  • In the coming months we will be tracking the availability and price in order to gauge the popularity of this 8GB Ram type on the aftermarket.

  • In other news, last month we began tracking two new types of DDR4 RAM – 16GB and 32GB DDR4 3200AA

  • Previously we were unable to locate adequate listings for the 16GB version, however that has changed this month. There are now a moderate amount of listings on eBay, enough to populate a server with at least 128GB of memory.

  • You can view last month’s report here
