Since 2019, we have been tracking changing parts prices for RAM, SSDs, Hard Drives, and various CPUs. This data is collected monthly, and then shared on this blog.

Currently, all listed prices are from eBay, for used hardware. We focus on used hardware because these prices change more frequently and this gives a better feel for changes in value.

This is being updated late in the month, but the prices were recorded as of October 3rd, 2022 and are still an accurate reflection of aftermarket prices for October

↑ or indicates if the price has gone up or down since last month
Price — The lowest price to buy this part from a reputable seller in a moderate quantity, price as shipped to the US
Availability — 6 or Fewer ebay listings = low
7-19 ebay listings = moderate
20+ ebay listings = high

Back in May of this year we began showcasing graphs with a 12-month timeframe for different types of items. Going forward, we think this will be a better visual representation of price fluctuations and will hopefully help identify pricing trends on the aftermarket.

This month we would like to highlight the 12-month graph for Hard Drives:

price trend chart
  • As seen from the graph above, Hard Drives prices have been steadily dropping in price since October of last year. The greatest price changes can be observed with the larger sized drives, 12TB and 14TB, and most recently 10TB. The smallest size, 3TB, has hovered around the same price point throughout the entirety of the past 12 months, suggesting that this could be the possible permanent price point for the foreseeable future.

  • In the past we have observed the 8TB HDD as being the ideal drive for price vs capacity, pricing around $9.375 per TB. At this time the 10TB is the close second, while the 3TB, 12TB and 14TB drives are priced above $10 per TB.

  • Only time will tell if the large HDD sizes will continue to fall in price, but until there are better solutions for storage based servers needing large amounts of space, we can predict the demand will keep the price high.

  • In other news, we have begun a new CPU Type for our monthly reports, the Xeon Gold 6138. It is currently listed around $200 each, and provides 20 CPU cores and all-cores-turbo of 2.8ghz. It compares favorably to the 14-core 2.9ghz turbo 2680v4 and the 18-core 2.6ghz turbo 2695v4, as being a reasonable upgrade once Xeon scalable systems flood the used market. Due to this we plan to keep an eye on the aftermarket stock of these CPUs for the foreseeable future.

  • Adversely, we have stopped tracking two CPU types due to a decrease in popularity. Those CPUs are the, E5-2660v2 and the E5-2697v2. Going forward we will only be tracking the E5-2680v2 for v2 CPUs.
