February 2019 Server Parts Pricing Report
Another month has gone by, and it’s time for the second installment of our monthly server parts pricing report.
You may have seen the wild price fluctuations on RAM and SSDs the last year or so. As well, some models of really powerful CPUs have come way down on the aftermarket. It can be a lot to keep up with. Along those lines, I’m going to be tracking these on a monthly basis, and sharing the results with you here.
Right now I’ll be tracking RAM, SSDs, Hard Drives, CPUs, and a couple of GPUs.
For now I’m focused on used hardware. As such, these prices are based on what you can get on Ebay. If there’s a demand for it, I might start tracking new hardware as well.
If there’s something you’re hoping I’ll track, let me know! email gabe [at] ioflood.com with subject “server parts pricing report”. I’ve had some feedback that people would like to see prices for new CPU models. Let me know if there are any you’d like to see included and I’ll consider adding them.
Firstly, see our January 2019 article so you can compare last months prices.
Note that – or + indicates if the price has gone up or down since last month.

Definition of terms / references:
* Price Low -- The lowest price to buy this part from a reputable seller in a moderate quantity, price as shipped to the US ** Price High -- There is a reasonably large quantity of this part available from multiple reputable sellers for this price or lower, price as shipped to the US *** Price for the lowest priced drive of this size, matching this model number or better in the same class. "Same class" would mean sata (S) or nvme (P), as applicable. "Better" means a higher model number than listed. Ranked from worst to best, Intel model numbers are 3500, 3510, 3600, 3610, 3700, 3710 (a) -- 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R ECC REG (b) -- 2Rx4 PC3L-12800R ECC REG (c) -- 4Rx4 PC3L-12800L ECC REG LRDIMM (d) DDR4 2133 ECC Registered (e) DDR4 2400 ECC Registered
Some differences from January that I felt were noteable:
- There are a fair number of 1.6tb Intel SSDs available for $160 now, versus $255 being the lowest price in January
- Most ram prices are pretty close to last month, except 32gb DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules have gone up about 10%.
- People wanting larger quantities of E5-v3 processors are in luck: the 2660, 2670, and 2680 model E5-v3 CPUs are available at reasonable prices in good quantities right now.
- Finally, for GPUs, the AMD Vega 64 is down by about 10% in price, while the NVIDIA 1080ti stayed about the same.
As last month, please share your feedback for any way you think this monthly feature could be more useful or helpful.
