Server Pricing Report – September 2022

Welcome to the ninth installment of our monthly server price reporting for 2022.

hard drives in server

Since 2019, we have been tracking changing parts prices for RAM, SSDs, Hard Drives, and various CPUs. This data is collected monthly, and then shared on this blog.

Currently, all listed prices are from eBay, for used hardware. We focus on used hardware because these prices change more frequently and this gives a better feel for changes in value.

Prices as of September 5th, 2022

Back in May of this year we began showcasing graphs with a 12-month timeframe for different types of items. Going forward, we think this will be a better visual representation of price fluctuations and will hopefully help identify pricing trends on the aftermarket.

This month we would like to highlight the 12-month graph for Mid-Tier CPUs:

price trend chart
  • As seen from the graph above, Mid-Tier CPUs have been steadily dropping in price since September of last year.

  • The peak of CPU pricing had occurred during the summer of 2021, before the then current Crypto-boom had ceased. After the boom, around August 2021, we had observed a price reduction in our tracked CPUs, about $15-$20 off the price previously listed at.

  • The only CPU that reverted back to its original price, at the time, was the E5-2690v4 CPU. That CPU type had its price shifted erratically over the course of the next few months, and only began its downward trend around January of this year.

  • The consistent downward trend reflecting across all mid-tier CPUs is also indicative of the usage cases for these CPUs, as they seem to be used as cheaper alternatives to whatever high-end CPU is currently trending.

  • Although it is hard to tell at this point when the price will reach its final resting price, we can expect the trend to continue as the CPUs are only getting older with time, and as newer models release more of these Intel E5 v2/v3/v4 CPUs will be come available on the aftermarket, leading to cheaper, more competitive prices.
